CDC recommends testing pool chlorine and pH at least twice a day, and more often when many people are using the pool. Regular checks matter because swimmers and other factors can lower chlorine levels.

Which test kit should you use?

CDC says a DPD test kit gives the most accurate chlorine and pH readings. Test strips can also be used, but they are less accurate. Follow the directions for your specific test kit and chemical products.

One important limitation: when a sample's chlorine is above 10 ppm, the test may partially or completely bleach out and show a falsely low or even zero result. Follow the test kit manufacturer's directions when interpreting readings in this range.

Record each reading and any adjustment so you can compare the next test. CDC recommends checking at least twice daily; add more rows when the pool is used heavily.

For common chlorine and pH guidance, see the pool chemistry levels chart. Use the reading from your test and the product strength on its label when calculating an adjustment; the label is the final word.
